STRIVE (Seniors Strength TRaining for Independence Vitality and Energy) is a fun, socially active, group strength training and wellness system, specifically designed for older adults. It was originally developed by Dr. Phillips, while a post-doctoral Fellow and research scientist at Stanford University School of Medicine, Center for Research in Disease Prevention, and he has continued to refine this over the last 10 years.
Conducted predominantly on strength training machines, STRIVE uniquely combines an ongoing, comprehensive wellness assessment with personalized, expert attention, from highly qualified professionals. This, in combination with proprietary, licensed teacher training and a ‘partner-based’ group set up, provides a safe and effective strengthening environment for a wide range of functional abilities.
The strong social and behavioral components embedded in STRIVE provides a sense of ‘community’ where conversations are conducted, new friends are made and experiences are shared. Participants attend not because they ‘should’ but because they want to. They attend 2-3 times per week, with each session typically lasting no more than 30-45 minutes.
Be strong for your health!
For more than a decade our STRIVE research has demonstrated not only that strength is the foundation of independence, mobility and quality of life for older adults, but it can also contribute to a reduction of risk and incidence of a variety of disabling diseases and health conditions. We have published a great deal of evidence on the functional benefits of STRIVE but there is much, much more!
The clinical and medical benefits to be gained from STRIVE include-
